For this recipe, any cooked fruit or jam may be used instead of the Poppy Seed Filling.

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F / 180°C / Gas Mark 4

For the poppy seed filling:
Mix the poppy seeds, milk, honey, chopped dates, chopped walnuts and cinnamon in a saucepan.

Cook over low heat until thick, stirring often. Remove from the heat to let it cool.

Set it aside.

In a large bowl; mix the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, ground almonds and lemon peel.

Cut in the butter, with a pastry cutter or 2 knives, until the mixture is crumbly.

Add the egg, lemon juice and water to the flour mixture.

Knead lightly into a ball; then divide into 8 equal parts.

Roll out each part; on a floured board until it is 1/4 inch thick, then cut into 4 inch squares.

Spoon about 1 teaspoon previously made Poppy Seed Filling into the center of each square.

Bring two ends together to form a cylinder. Pinch together to seal.

Place on a greased baking sheet and brush with milk.

Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 15 to 20 minutes.

Enjoy.
