To determine if an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it is fresh; if it rises to the surface, throw it away.

Ingredients

Directions:

Before baking, preheat oven to 400°F / 200°C / Gas Mark 6

Sift the all-purpose flour, baking powder, powdered milk and salt into a bowl.

Cut the vegetable oil into the flour mixture until it resembles fine crumbs.

Cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to use. Properly stored, this mixture will keep for about a month. Be sure to label and date your container.

This recipe makes 13 cups of homemade biscuit mix.

To Make the Biscuits:
Add 1/2 cup milk to 2 cups homemade Biscuit Mix and stir until combined. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 20 seconds.

Pat down or roll out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a 2 inch biscuit cutter. If you don't have a biscuit cutter, you can use the open end of a drinking glass.

Bake in a preheated 400°F oven for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.

Serve hot. Makes 10-12 biscuits.
