1. Mix 1/4 cup water together with the cornstarch in a small cup until smooth, to make a 'slurry'.
2. Set aside.
3. Combine cranberries, sugar, the remaining 3/4 cup water and almond extract in medium saucepan.
4. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
5. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for about 5 minutes or until cranberries are tender and sugar is dissolved.
6. Return cranberry mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
7. Stir in the cornstarch slurry.
8. Boil for an additional 2 minutes or until thickened, stirring constantly.
9. Be careful, cranberries have a tendency to splatter when they burst and it is extremely hot on the skin.
