Margarine is a spread used for flavoring, baking and cooking. It's most often used as a substitute for butter.
Margarine tops butter when it comes to heart health. It's made from vegetable oils, so it contains unsaturated "good" fats such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.
Although originally made from animal fats, most margarine consumed today is made from vegetable oil. Since most margarines contain absolutely no animal products, it makes margarine a suitable Vegan alternative to butter.
Margarine is crucial to Kosher cooking because the dietary rules don't allow mixing meat and milk products, such as butter, at a meal.
Margarine, made of vegetable oil, can be eaten with either meat or milk, and it can be Kosher if Rabbis oversee production to be sure no dairy products touch the machinery.
