Almond extract is the concentrated liquid made from water, alcohol, and oil from bitter almonds. It's typically used in baking. A little goes a long way because the flavor is so strong.
Almond is a species of tree native to Iran and surrounding countries but widely cultivated elsewhere. The sweeter varieties such as the Nonpareil and Jordanolo are best for eating and cooking.
On the tree, Almonds resemble small green peaches. They do not usually fall to the ground when mature as do most other nuts. When the Almonds mature, the hulls split open and the shells and kernels begin to dry while still on the tree. When most of the hulls in the center of the tree have split open, the nuts can be harvested by knocking them from the tree. They then remove the hulls and dry the nuts.
Almonds help your heart stay healthy. They lower LDL which is bad cholesterol and are packed with vitamin E, magnesium and potassium, which helps oxygen and nutrients flow more freely through the blood. Almonds are also a bone-building food..
Usually found in the Essence, Extracts, Flavorings & Colouring Aisle.
