Onions are considered root vegetables because they grow below the surface of the soil.
The Onion is a member of the Allium family of plants and is a close relative of garlic, scallions, leeks and chives.
An onion is a round vegetable with a brown skin. It has many white layers on its inside which have a strong, sharp smell and taste.
Onions are a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, potassium, manganese and copper.
They also contain antioxidants and compounds that fight inflammation, decrease triglycerides and reduce cholesterol levels, all of which may lower the risk of heart disease.
Usually found in the Vegetable Aisle.
